My humble salutation to the epitome of Shri Lakshmi Narayana, one of the Trimurthis, the Master of Preservation.

3. OM KRISHNA- RAMA- SHIVA- MARUTHYADIROOPAYA NAMAH
   ॐ कृष्णरामशिवमारूत्यादिरूपाय नमः

ఓం శ్రీ సాయి కృష్ణరామశి వ మారుత్యా ది రూపాయ నమః
My humble salutation to the embodiment of Krishna and Rama, the avatars of Shri Mahavishnu - (the Preserver), one of the Trimurthis - Shri Shiva (the Destroyer) and Maruthi - Shri Rama's humble follower, who symbolised power and yet, displayed pure devotion, to his Master.

My humble salutation to Shri Sainath, who resides at Shiladi (Shridi) - on the banks of the holy river Godavari.

My humble salutation to the eternal one who vanquishes Time (or death), as evidenced to Markandeya.

Chapter XII

Now let us see in this Chapter how devotees were received and treated by Baba.

Saints' Mission

We have seen before, that the purpose or object of Divine Incarnation is to protect the good and destory the wicked. But the mission of the Saints is quite different. To them the good and the wicked are the same. First they feel for the evil-doers and set them on the right path. They are like the Agasti to destroy the Bhava-sagar (the ocean of wordly existence) or like the Sun to the darkness of ignorance. The Lord (God) dwells in the Saints. In fact they are not different from Him. Our Sai is One of these, Who incarnated for the welfare of the devotees, Supreme in knowledge and surrounded with divine lustre, He loved all beings equally. He was unattached. Foes and friends, kings and paupers, were the same to Him. Hear His powers. For the sake of devotees, He spent His stock of merits and was ever alert to help them. But the devotees could never approach Him, unless He meant to receive them. If their turn did not come, Baba did not remember them, and His Leelas could not reach their ears. Then, how could they think of seeing Him? some men desired to see Sai Baba but they did not get any opportunity of taking His darshan, till His Mahasamadhi. There are many such persons, whose desire for Baba's darshan was not thus satisfied. If these persons, believing in Him, listen to His Leelas, their quest for milk (darshan) will be, to a great extent, satisfied by the butter-milk (Leelas) even today. If some persons went there by sheer luck and took Baba's darshan, were they able to stay there longer? No. Nobody could go there of  their own accord, and nobody culd stay there long even if they so wished. They could stay there, so long as Baba permitted them to stay, and had to leave the place when asked to do so by Baba; so everything depended of Baba's will.

Kaka Mahajani

Once, Kaka Mahajani went to Shirdi from Bombay. He wanted to stay there for one week, and enjoy the Gokul-Ashtami festival. As soon as he took Baba's darshan, Baba asked him - "When are you returning home?" He was rather surprised at this question, but he had to given an answer. He said that he would go home when Baba ordered him to do so. Then Baba said - "Go tomorrow". Baba's word was law and had to be obeyed. Kaka Mahajani, therefore, left Shirdi, immediately. When he went to his office in Bombay, he found that his employer was anxiously waiting for him. His munim, i.e., the manager, suddenly fell ill, hence Kaka's presence was absolutely necessary. He had even sent a letter to Kaka at Shirdi, which was redirected to him at Bombay.

Bhausaheb Dhumal

Now listen to an opposite story. Once Bhausaheb Dhumal, a pleader, was going to Niphad for a case. On the way he came to Shirdi, took Baba's darshan and wanted to proceed to Niphad immediately. But, Baba did not premit him to do so. He made him stay at shirdi, for a week or more. In the meanwhile, the magistrate at Niphad suffered intensely from pain in his abdomen, and the case was adjourned. Mr. Dhumal was then allowed to go and attend to his case. It went on for some months and was tried by four magistrates. Ultimately Mr. Dhumal won the case, and his client was acquitted.

Mrs. Nimonkar

Mr. Nanasaheb Nimonkar, Watandar of Nomon and Honorary Magistrate, was staying at Shirdi with his wife. Mr. and Mrs. Nimonkar were spending most of their time in the Masjid with Baba and serving Him. It so happened, that their son fell ill at Belapur and the mother decided, with Baba's consent, to go to Belapur, and see her son and other relatives; and stay there for a few days, but Mr. Nanasaheb asked her to return the next day. The lady was in a fix and did not know what to do; but her God Sai came to her help. While leaving Shirdi she went to Baba, who was standing in front of Sathe's wada with Mr. Nanasaheb and others, and prostrated at His Feet and asked His permission to go. Baba said to her, "Go, go quickly, be calm and unperturbed. Stay comfortably at Belapur for four days. See all your relatives and then return to Shirdi." How opportune were Baba's words! Mr. Nanasaheb's proposal was overruled by Baba's decree.

Moolay Shastri of Nasik

An orthodox Agnihotri Brahmin of Nasik, by name moolay Shastri, who had studied the six Shastras and was well-versed in astrology and palmistry, once came to Shirdi to see Mr. Bapusaheb Booty, the famous millionaire of Nagpur. After seeing him, he and others went to see Baba in the Masjid. Baba bought various fruits and other things from vendors with His own money, and distributed them to the persons present in the Masjid. Baba used to press the mango on all sides so skilfully that when any person received it from Baba and sucked it, he got all the pulp at once in his mouth and could throw away the seed and the skin forthwith. Plantains were peeled off by Baba and the kernel was distributed to the devotees, while the skins were retained by Baba for Himself. Moolay Shastri, as a palmist, wanted to examine Baba's hand or plam and requested Him to extend the same. Baba ignored his request and gave four plantains to him. Then, they all returned to the Wada and Moolay Shastri bathed, wore sacred clothes, and started his routine duties, viz. Agnihotra etc. Then Baba as usual started for Lendi and said - "Take some Geru (i.e. a red miry substance, to dye clothes in saffron-colour), we shall today wear saffron-coloured cloth. None understood what Baba meant. Then after some time when Baba returned, and preparations for the noon-Arati were being made. Bapusaheb Jog asked Moolay Shastri, whether he would accompany him for the Arti. He replied that he would see Baba in the afternoon. Very soon Baba sat on his seat, was worshipped by the devotees and Arti commenced. Then Baba said - "Get some Dakshina from the new (Nasik) Brahmin." Booty himself went to get the Dakshina; and when he gave Baba's message to Moolay Shastri, he was sorely perplexed. He thought in his mind thus: "I am a pure Agnihotri Brahmin, why should I pay Dakshina? Baba may be a great Saint. I am not His dependent." But as a great Saint like Sai Baba was asking for Dakshina through a millionaire like Booty, he could not refuse. So leaving his routine unfinished, he forthwith started with Booty to the Masjid. Thinking himself holy and sacred, and the Masjid otherwise, he remained at a distance, and joining his hands threw flowers at Baba. Then lo! all of a sudden, he saw no Baba on the seat, but saw his late Guru Gholap Swami there. He was wonder-struck. Could this be a dream? No, it was not, as he was wide awake; but though awake, how could his late Guru Gholap be there? He was speechless for some time. He pinched himself and thought again, but could not reconcile the fact of his late Guru Gholap being in the Masjid. Ultimately, leaving all doubt, he went up, prostrated at his Guru's feet and then getting up stood there with folded hands. Other people sang Baba's Arati, while Moolay Shastri chanted his Guru's name. Then casting off all pride of caste and ideas about sacredness, he fell flat at his Guru's feet and closed his eyes. When he got up and opened his eyes, he saw Baba asking for Dakshina. Seeing Baba's blissful form, and His inconceivable power, Moolay Shastri forgot himself. He was extremely pleased, his eyes were full of tears of joy. He again saluted Baba and gave the Dakshina. He said that his doubt was removed and that he saw his own Guru. On seeing his wonderful Leela of Baba all the people, including Moolay Shastri, were much moved, and they realized the meaning of Baba's words, "Bring Geru, we shall don saffron-coloured garment." Such is the wonderful Leela of Baba.

A Doctor

Once a Mamlatdar came to Shirdi with a doctor friend of his. The Doctor said that his Deity was Rama and that he would not bow before a Mohammedian, and so, he was unwilling to go to Shirdi. The Mamlatdar replied, that nobody would press him to make a bow, nor would ask him to do so. So he should come and give the pleasure of his company. Accordingly, they came to Shirdi, and went to the Masjid for Baba's darshan. All were wonder-struck to see the Doctor going ahead and saluting Baba. They asked him how he forgot his resolve and bowed before a Mussalman. Then the Doctor replied that he saw his beloved Deity, Rama, on the seat and he, therefore prostrated himself before Him. Then as he was saying this, he saw Sai Baba there again. Being dismayed, he said, "Is this a dream? How could He be a Mohammedian? He is a great Yogasampanna (full of Yoga) Avatar."

Next day, he made a vow and began to fast. He absented himself from the Masjid, resolving not to go there, until Baba blessed him. Three days passed and on the fourth day, a close friend of his from Khandesh, turned up, and with him, he went to the Masjid for Baba's darshan. After the salutation, Baba asked him, whether anybody had gone to call him, so that he had come. Hearing this vital question, the doctor was moved. The same night he was blessed by Baba, and he experienced the Bliss supreme, in his sleep. Then he left for his town, where he experienced the same state of a fortnight. Thus his devotion to Sai Baba increased manifold.

The moral of all the stories mentioned above, specially, that of Moolay Shastri, is this that we should have firm faith in our Guru and nowhere else.

1) Mission of Saints in this world

    Hemadpant begins the chapter by explaining the mission of saints in this world. For a saint everyone irrespective of their caste, creed, religion, status etc are same. A saint treats both good and bad equally. Rather saints main focus is on rectifying their faults and mistakes and put them on right path. And Saibaba is one of such great saints who have blessed everyone whoever have come to him. Instead of saying someone went to see baba, it would be correct to say that none can see baba without his permission or will. It was only baba's mercy which brought people to shirdi to see him. We can categorise people into four categories namely the afflicted (Aartulu), the seekers of wealth (Ardhaardhulu), the seekers of wisdom (Jignasuvulu) and the seers (Gnanulu or liberated).The first two, take refuge in god for worldly pleasures, wealth and success. They can choose any type of god or goddess for the fulfillment of their wishes. The almighty with all his mercy on most occasions solves their problems and fulfils their desires. But the list of desires is endless. We can see that mostly people who approached baba were of first category and the percentage of the next categories was very less. Baba always said that people would approach him first with desires only and slowly once their desires or wishes are fulfilled, they get faith on baba and slowly climb to the next categories. Baba used to say "I will fulfill all your desires till you ask what I wanted to give you". When our epics,sastras,puranas say that desires are endless in what way we can come out of the circle desires and go to next category and finally receive from baba what he wanted to give us. Baba has his own way of blessing people in fulfilling their wishes, he would create circumstances in such a way that along the path of fulfilling desires, even they get slowly realisation that there is something more beyond these worldly pleasures which needs to be seeked and achieved. In this process a person slowly gets transformation and he may out of his frequency follow any path of the nine devotions namely (1) Shravana (Hearing); 

(2) Kirtana (Praying); (3) Smarana (Remembering); (4) Padasevana (resorting to the feet); 

(5) Archana (Worship); (6) Namaskara (Bowing); (7) Dasya (Service); (8)Sakhyatva (Friendship); 

(9) Atmanivedana (surrender of the self).  

Once a devotee follows either one or more paths of devotion with faith and have patience, he will be blessed in reaching his goal (i.e get from baba what baba wanted to give). For all these things to happen, we are only puppets in the hands of baba, as baba said it is he only who brings people to shirdi. Our part is only to have faith and stick to him and have patience in following his words. Hemadpant gives some examples in showing that it is Baba's will which either brings or sends people to and from shirdi.

2) Baba's Will

     The first case of Kaka mahajani when he plans to stay in shirdi planning everything, baba sends him immediately the next day and in the second case when bhausahed dhumal plans to leave immediately, baba makes him stay for more than a week. What we can infer from both of these cases, Baba is  omnipotent i.e being in shirdi itself, he knew that there was  a need of kaka mahajani presence in his office at mumbai, similarly in case of bhausahed he knew that the magistrate had a stomach pain and the case was going to be adjourned. So with all these we can say no body can stay at shirdi or leave shirdi without baba's will. It was only Baba's will which made either someone to stay or leave shirdi. In another chapter hemadpant clearly explains about the various cases where people facing problems not listening to baba's words. In another instance of mrs. nimonkar, how baba helped her by overruling her husbands order clearly stating how baba's will will protect people who have faith in baba.

3) Belief in Guru

    Moolay shastri's episode is a classic example where baba blesses him with his guru darshan. From this episode we can infer that we need to have faith on our guru only, even when we visit other saints, we need to see our guru in them and treat them as our guru only. Because even though externally the forms may be different, but internally all gurus are one only.

4) Baba- All Pervasive

   The episode of a doctor is another classic example showing the all pervasiveness of baba. The doctor believed in Lord Rama and said that he will never bow down before a muslim fakir.But the moment he stepped into the masjid, even before others bow down, he first prostrated saying that he could see his favorite god Lord Rama in place of  baba. This clearly shows that Baba knows the inner feelings of everyone and blesses them according to their wish. Also a very important thing how baba blesses people, from the episode it is clearly evident that baba blessed him in his dream. From this we can infer that dreams related to baba are not just mere dreams but they are blessings from baba.

Ganga Yamuna Sangam - Sai Charanam

A great incident when baba blessed dasganu with ganga and  yamuna at his charanam. 

Once dasganu wanted to go on pilgrimage to Prayag the place where ganga and yamuna merge as one considered as very sacred pilgrim place. Dasganu went to baba to seek his permission. When he came to baba, baba told him that there is no need to go anywhere for a true disciple. He can find everything at his guru's feet only. Saying thus Baba blessed dasganu by showing the ganga, yamuna at his feet.

Let us analyse what baba is trying to say. Baba is saying that there is no need to go anywhere neither pilgrimage nor dipping in rivers like ganga, yamuna etc. For a true disciple everything is at his guru's feet only. He can get the same result of doing pilgirmages and dipping in various sacred rivers by just serving his guru. Guru is everything.

After this incident dasganu was overwhelmed with joy and sang that for him (and a true disciple)  shirdi itself is pandaripur and baba himself is pandurang. Baba so many times blessed  his devotees with that particular form in whatever form they prayed or done puja to him. He told "as you sow, so you reap", "As you have feeling in your mind, so is your experience". For people who prayed him as dattatreya, he has given darshan as dattatreya, for who looked Sriram in him, he gave darshan as sriram, for a person who had seen his guru in baba, baba blessed him with his guru darshan. 

The essence of this is that it is enough to hold sai charanam rather than wasting time moving here and there.

Sai Charanam will release us from the bonds of life and death. It will bless us to realise Sai. It will show us the path to realise the formless brahman which has taken the form as sai. It will purify us from all the sins and mistakes we have committed in this birth and all the previous births. It will cleanse and purify us at all levels.

Let us all hold to Sai Charanam without further wasting a single second, by whose grace we are bound to cross this ocean of samsara very easily. Those who have understood this truth by the grace of baba are really blessed. 

Pray baba to bless us all in realising this truth.

Fear - The root Cause which causes havoc in our life

Fear -  the simple four letter word which creates all the havoc in the pathway of our  lives. Everyone has some sort of fear. Fear of survival, fear of identity, fear of  failure, fear of  success, fear of  wealth etc. The basic thing which takes us away from the concept of understanding sai is fear. What Sai says is Look for me in all beings, I am there in your heart as well as all the beings hearts. One who has realised me thus has understood and realised me. But the fear makes us ignore this truth, fear makes us not to accept this truth. What fear tells is that I and you are different. This difference creates insecurity which gives rise to fear and make us think and function according to our convenience, according to our will.

This fear will change our dimension of thinking, our behaviour, our attitude, everything. Instead of having faith on Sai, that he is the supreme and he knows well about us, not only our present, but as well as our past and our future, we tend to ignore this fact and start measuring sai within our limited knowledge limits, we start looking to sai with our physical eyes, we ask proofs, we ask for miracles, otherwise we wont believe him.

It is like this, when we have a experienced driver driving a motorcycle, and we are sitting on the back, because of our ignorance, our insecurity, our fear, we start giving suggestions to him, how he need to drive.

It is the same, when we have sai as our life charioteer, still we are unable to handover our steering to him, we are always intervening and giving suggestions to him. By the way of prayers,requests we are asking him with our limited knowledge, when he wants to grace us with abundance. The classic example is by baba himself where he says "Whom can he say as his disciple, he is asking people to take cartloads of wealth available with him, but none of them are eligible and asking only for unwanted stones(desires)"

Let us think for a while and question ourselves. question1) do we have faith in sai that he is the all pervading, and he knows about us better than ourselves. If we answer the above question as yes, then for any next questions which arise, this answer itself is an answer. If we answer as no, then we need to know more about sai, read sai satcharitra again and again, till we know sai.

Let us take some examples to analyse ourselves in a better way. Ex.1) If  I have met with an accident, and I think why sai has not saved me, why I need to undergo this trauma of accident followed by hospitalisation, surgery, expenses etc. In what way do I have faith in Sai, when I started doubting him. The "Why" should not be used in a negative way. That is to doubt sai. Why sai has not saved me, rather should be used only in a positive way to ask ourselves, why sai has saved me. Because he knows better about us, he has saved our life. Different are his methods in mending his devotees lifes, different are his ways in teaching his disciples, different are his approaches in erasing the bad karma who follow him. It is as simple as such a kid asking a teacher, why she had beaten him or rather why she asked to write an imposition or why she asked to read a lesson. Does the kid have better knowledge than the teacher. Definetly not. But what is happening, with our limited knowledge, we are gaining ego instead of humility, because of our fear and insecurity we are becoming selfish rather then selfless.

So if we really have faith in sai, then the first point we agree that sai knows everything, without his will not even a single leaf move. Then it implies that whatever is coming our way, it is only by the will of sai, if sai is giving you something - let it be anything, let it be money, riches, troubles, anything. If you have faith in sai, then all are equal. Whether it is positive or negative, you are bound to think that it is given by sai and need to perform. Result has to be left to sai. When the thing which is coming our way is not in our bounds or our control, in what way can we influence the result or outcome of that thing. How foolish it is to think that we have total idea, control of the thing which is coming our way and we can alter it or complete it. Nothing is in our hands, everything is according to his will, the day we understand this , we will never complain for anything in our life. The one who is always complaining in life has not realised this. The day we understand, we will not fear for anything in our life.

To assure everyone that when he is there we need not fear for anything. Baba is giving the assurance "Why fear when I am here". Let us make Sai as our life charioteer and hand over the steering to him, once we have done like this, let us have faith in him, he knows better than us about ourselves.  Let us not miss the opportunity of having the complete grace of sai, by asking him for less. Let us take an example for this, we are looking for a job, baba wanted to grace us with a greater position, but out of ignorance we ask him for a smaller position. If we ask, we ask with our limited knowledge, when he gives, he gives with multitude basing on our past, present and future. Just have faith in him and remove all your fears. Let our faith overshadow our fear resulting in realising sai. Let our faith be so strong that there is no instance of fear in us, then that day we are bound to realise sai. Simple logic is when we dont have fear, we dont feel insecure, when there is no insecurity, the entire world appears as one rather than two or more.  When this realisation occurs, we dont consider others as different. Others problems will be ours, others happiness will be ours. It is just like this even though the hands, legs ,ears etc of our body seem to be separate and different, but when seen in entirety they are all part of the same body. If there is a pain in some part of the body, the remaining parts can also feel that. similarly even though people appear to be different, when seen from a higher plane such as sai, all are equal and part of the same body called Sai.

The day we realise this, we have realised sai, we have overcome fear and merged with sai. Then there is no two - sai and I. There is only one - Sai, because I has merged into Sai.
